Michael Jackson - one year anniversary
I am a little late for this post. I can't believe it has been one year since the death of Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson was truly a great entertainer. I have liked his music since he first started in the Jackson 5. I did have a lot of his earlier albums. Thriller and Billie Jean. I do remember my girlfriend loving him and playing his Billie Jean album all the time in our apartment. It was very sad how his life turned out. I also have another remembrance about his Thriller video. We were all excited when they had the world wide premiere of that video. We all stayed home and watched it. It was great. I hope he is finally at peace.

Earthquake
Did you feel the earthquake today? I didn't. A couple of girls at work did notice the shaking.
Remember Me - movie
We watched Remember Me tonight. It is a movie starting Robert Pattinson (from Twilight), Emilie DeRavin (Claire from Lost), Chris Cooper, Pierce Brosnan (James Bond) and Lena Olin. I really didn't know what to expect from watching this. I thought it was very good. A lot of different emotions coming through. I don't want to give anything away about it. You should definitely watch it. I really enjoyed his relationship with his sister in the movie too. The only thing I really hated about it is that Rob's character smokes practically the whole way through.

Best Friends
There is an article in the New York Times called Best Friends - You must be kidding. They are saying that the era of a best friend is ending. Schools and administrators are suggesting that a child doesn't need a best friend but a bunch of friends. They try to encourage group friendships. "Most children naturally seek close friends. In a survey of nearly 3,000 Americans ages 8 to 24 conducted last year by Harris Interactive, 94 percent said they had at least one close friend. But the classic best-friend bond — the two special pals who share secrets and exploits, who gravitate to each other on the playground and who head out the door together every day after school — signals potential trouble for school officials intent on discouraging anything that hints of exclusivity, in part because of concerns about cliques and bullying." I got to say that I had a best friend growing up and still do and also had a close group of friends. There was no bullying. I loved having a best friend that I could tell anything too, call them up at any hour of the day and night and have them listen to my problems. What do you think?
Year of Wonders - Geraldine Brooks
I just finished this book and I have to say it was really good and very interesting. It is about a village in the 1600s in England who shut themselves off from the world when the plague comes to their village. It is about the tiny village and the people that live there and what they have to do to survive. This actually happened back in the 1600s in a town called Eyam in Derbyshire. It is a historical fiction. It is from the perspective of 18-year-old Anna Firth a widow with two sons who works for the reverend and his wife as a maid. I really enjoyed the book - I couldn't put it down.

In the Spotlight-Tom Cruise
My spotlight this week goes to Tom Cruise. Now you must be saying why Tom Cruise, well I have always like him as an actor every since his first really big hit – Risky Business. Just a little trivia about him. He was actually born in Syracuse, New York on July 3, 1962. As a matter of fact one of my good friend’s brother was also born on that day in the same hospital. She always said that Tom Cruise was her brother and that the babies were switched at birth. If you look at his career he has done some really good films: Top Gun, Cocktail, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, Far and Away, The Firm, A Few Good Men, the Mission Impossible films, Jerry Maguire, etc. He also was in a movie called Tropic Thunder as Les Grossman. You wouldn’t even recognize him in that role. He is always reinventing himself. My favorite Tom Cruise movies are: Far and Away, Top Gun and Jerry Maguire. He is known to be a very generous kind man who has donated a lot of money to different charities. Will you see his new movie?

Hot in Cleveland - new show
There is a new show airing tonight at 10:00 a.m. on TVLand. It is called Hot in Cleveland and stars 4 wonderful actresses. Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves ( from Frasier), Wendie Malik ( from Just Shoot Me) and Betty White ( she needs no introduction). It revolves around three fabulous L.A. women of a certain age who are best friends (Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick). When their plane -- headed to Paris for a girls-only celebration -- unexpectedly lands in Cleveland and they soon rediscover themselves in a new 'promised land'. Loving their new home, the women find themselves living under one roof and battling the sassy caretaker (Betty White) of the property they have rented (from TV land website). Are you going to tune in?
Psycho
Just a bit of movie history. It was 50 years ago today June 16, 1950 that Psycho had its world premiere in New York City. That has to be one of Alfred Hitchcock's greatest movies. When I watched that movie it scare the living daylights out of me. Janet Leigh did a fantastic job in that movie. Bet you didn't know but Alfred Hitchcock or Anthony Perkins were not nominated for an Oscar that year. The house itself is scary also.

March - by Geraldine Brooks
I just finished this book. You have to read it. It was great. it is about a man named March. you might remember his name from one of your childhood stories - Little Woman. He is the father to Joe, Amy, Beth and Meg. The author wrote a story about their father and his life - what she thought happened to him. It involves the civil war and slavery. It is very well done and she also won a Pulitzer Prize for this book. Give it a try!

Cooperstown

On one of our trips this past week we went to Cooperstown. I love the town. It is the home of baseball. Saw the Baseball Hall of Fame, Doubleday Field, had a late breakfast there and just enjoyed the day! If you get a chance to go you should. There is also the Farmer's Museum and James Fenimore Cooper Museum.

Shutter Island
We watched Shutter Island tonight. I had read the book but didn't remember anything about it. It was really good. Leonard DiCaprio again shows everyone why he is such a great actor. Martin Scorsese was the director and he did such a good job - he had a lot of references to Hitchcock. You should definitely see it.

The Irresistible Henry House by Lisa Grunwald
I just finished this book - It was great. Henry arrives in the world as a "practice baby," passed between a dozen young women at the Practice House of Wilton College's Home Economics program. After a year these children are adopted and another baby comes to the house. Henry though stays with Martha the program director and she raises him as her own. This was a great story told over a couple of decades. I enjoyed this immensely. If you get a chance you should read it.

The Arkell Museum
We went to this museum today in Canajoharie, New York. Now some of you might know that town from Beech-Nut Foods. That is where it all started. This museum was great. One of the presidents of Beech-nut Bartlet Arkell started this museum in 1927 at the library across from the plant. It recently reopened in a new building, with exhibitions on American art and Mohawk Valley history attached to the old stone library. They have quite a number of paintings and also the history behind the Beech-Nut Foods - old advertising, etc. We really enjoyed it. If you need a little road trip it is only about two hours away. We also ate at a little restaurant called Melissa's - great sandwiches and soup. You should check it out.

Memorial Day Weekend
How was your weekend? We had a nice one - barbecue with some friends, walked around Armory Square and a little housework - I cleaned out my closet - or rather cleaned out half my closet. Have organized the rack. Have to do the shoes, purses and sweaters next. But suffice it to say - I am on the right track. It was a beautiful weekend. Hope you enjoyed yours.

It's Complicated
Lost
I have to say that the season finale of Lost was great - I thought the way they tied it all up was good. It is interesting that the first show of Lost started with Jack laying in a bamboo field with his eye opening up and the last show was of him dying in the same bamboo field with his eyes closing and with Vincent the dog laying down next to him. I also liked the sideways reality where everyone met up and went off to heaven together. I am going to miss the show. I really enjoyed watching it for the past six years. When everyone at work stopped watching because it was getting so confusing and some parts stupid, I hung in there. I am so glad I did. I do think it is one of the greatest shows of all time. It will be missed.
